The Leoben fire department section conducted a large-scale exercise with 92 emergency personnel at the Mayr-Melnhof Holz site, which underscores the special fire protection requirements in the wood processing industry. Wood processing facilities of this dimension are considered special objects in fire protection due to high wood dust concentrations (explosion hazard according to ATEX directive), large sawn timber storage with raw densities of 400–500 kg/m³ and the classification of solid wood in fire class D according to EN 13501-1. Planners of such industrial buildings must ensure accessibility for large fire department contingents according to the Industrial Building Directive, in addition to automatic extinguishing systems and smoke extraction systems. The exercise serves to prepare for scenarios in which conventional extinguishing techniques reach their limits due to the quantity of materials.
