A product innovation that could intensify competition in the German roof tile segment: Manufacturer Creaton is expanding its portfolio with the through-colored smooth tile 'Visio'. With this market launch, the company is strategically positioning itself in the premium segment and responding to changing design requirements in the pitched roof sector.
Through-colored roof tiles differ from engobed or glazed variants through homogeneous coloring of the entire body. Unlike surface-finished tiles, where chipping can expose the underlying clay color, through-colored products maintain their color effect even with mechanical damage. For planners, this means greater design certainty throughout the service life, which for tiles according to DIN EN 1304 is at least 50 years.
The market launch occurs at a time when the German roof tile market is characterized by high consolidation. In addition to Creaton, BMI/Braas, Erlus and Wienerberger are competing for market share in a segment that has suffered from declining new construction since 2022. Smooth tiles address a specific architectural language – the purist, flat roof appearance without visible mortar joints, which is particularly demanded for modern residential buildings and prestige projects.
With 'Visio', Creaton is focusing on differentiation through aesthetics and surface homogeneity. While technical parameters such as bulk density, frost resistance according to DIN EN 539-2 and rain impermeability are largely standardized for smooth tiles, design flexibility increasingly determines product selection for projects in this category. For architects and planners, the new product offers an additional option in the material palette for pitched roofs, particularly for projects with high requirements for color fastness and surface appearance.
Whether 'Visio' can capture market share in the highly competitive premium segment will also depend on how the product is positioned price-wise and what availability Creaton can secure through its distribution network. The product launch underscores the continuing trend toward differentiated roof covering solutions despite challenging market conditions in the construction industry.
